I'm excited to introduce another special piece in my Porthole Collection—a lamp that draws inspiration from one of Ireland’s most iconic landmarks: Hook Lighthouse in County Wexford. This one-of-a-kind stained glass lamp, titled "Hook Lighthouse Sunset," captures the breathtaking beauty and timeless allure of the lighthouse and the surrounding seascape at sunset.
Craftsmanship and Design
The "Lighthouse Lamp" is a stunning representation of the magic I’ve witnessed during my many visits to this historic lighthouse. The centrepiece of the design is the lighthouse itself, standing tall against the backdrop of a sunset.
To the right of the lighthouse, a red sailboat drifts lazily across the water, adding a sense of calm and quiet movement to the composition. The boat’s red sails contrast beautifully with the serene blue-green waters, which are created using opal and mottled stained glass, evoking the gentle ebb and flow of the ocean’s tides.
The lighthouse’s light beams are a key feature, shining from either side of the top of the structure. These beams extend outward, stretching across the sea in bright, radiant lines. They symbolize not only the lighthouse’s role as a guide for sailors but also a beacon of hope and direction in the vastness of the sea.
This unique stained glass creation is finished in a pewter patina, which gives the design a subtle, timeless elegance. The pewter complements the cool tones of the sea and sky, while also enhancing the lighthouse's sturdy and enduring presence.
The glass is mounted in a handcrafted spalted beech chunky wood frame, made locally from wood carefully selected for its beautiful, natural patterns. The spalted beech adds a touch of organic warmth and texture, creating a stunning contrast with the smooth, luminous stained glass.
Inspiration
The inspiration for the "Lighthouse Lamp" comes from my many trips to the Hook Lighthouse, one of the oldest operating lighthouses in the world. Standing at the edge of the rugged coastline, I’ve spent countless hours watching the lighthouse light up as the sun dipped below the horizon. The peacefulness of these moments—watching the red sailboats drift across the water and the lighthouse casting its guiding light—is something that has stayed with me and is now reflected in this lamp.
The sunset symbolises the end of the day but also brings with it a feeling of peace, warmth, and beauty. The red sailboat represents the spirit of adventure and exploration, gently moving across the waters with a sense of purpose and calm. Together, these elements create a scene that speaks to the balance of nature, history, and the quiet journeys we all embark on.
Lighting and Versatility
When illuminated, the lamp comes to life, casting a warm, inviting glow that fills the room. The sunset hues shimmer in the glass, while the blue-green waters take on a soft, calming tone. The light from the lamp emphasizes the lighthouse’s beams, adding depth and dimension to the scene. This lamp is perfect for creating a tranquil atmosphere in any space, whether it’s a living room, study, or hallway.
As with all pieces in the Porthole Collection, the lamp’s design is versatile and would look beautiful whether placed on a mantel, a side table, or near a window to catch the natural light during the day. The wooden frame’s natural texture and the soft glow from the stained glass make this piece both a functional light source and a stunning piece of art.
This lamp is not just an object, but a personal expression of my connection to Ireland’s coastal heritage and the natural beauty of our landscapes. It’s a reminder of the power of light to guide us, the beauty of nature’s ever-changing colours, and the peace that comes from watching the sun set over the water.
Each lamp is supplied with a rocker ON/OFF switch, on a gold coloured electric lead with a 13A 3 pin plug. Approx size: 11.5" wide x 11" tall x 2.7" deep.
